A Saturday in the reuse shop
Shop days are part market, part mission—customers leave with furniture, and the charity gains income that backstops free starter packs.

Every good sofa, table, and bundle of homeware sold in Dumfries keeps items in use and helps pay for Emergency Home Starter Packs when referrals spike.

That sofa sold on Saturday helped us stock towels on Monday.
Walk into the SHAX shop in Dumfries and you are looking at more than bargain furniture. You are looking at diverted waste, local reuse, and—quietly—income that helps keep starter packs free when partner referrals come through the system.
Donations arrive at the warehouse: beds, tables, chairs, sideboards, sometimes entire house clearances that would otherwise tip. Volunteers and staff test, clean, repair where sensible, and price items for families who cannot afford high-street homeware.
Not everything is sold. Some pieces are too worn; some parts feed pack assembly or recycling streams. In 2025/26 SHAX reported keeping substantial tonnage in use rather than landfill—part of the charity’s environmental story, but also a financial one. Fewer skip fees and more shop sales mean more headroom for kettles and bedding bought new.
There is no neat equation on a whiteboard—“one sofa equals one pack”—because referrals and stock do not line up that cleanly. The honest version is simpler: reuse smooths the bumps. When shop weeks are strong, pressure on pack budgets eases. When referrals cluster, fundraising and sponsorship have to carry more weight.
That is why the charity asks locals to buy, donate quality items, and give cash when they can. Buying a table from SHAX is a practical act. Calling to sponsor a pack is a direct one. Both keep help in Dumfries & Galloway.
